Taking into account the high level of the registered teams, we decided to adapt the structure of our Men Under 19 competition from this year on. We will not work with two separate competitions any more, but all teams will play in one competition. They will start in two different conferences, and the main difference between the two conferences will be the officiating, as only a limited number of international referees is available. Those international referees will initialy officiate in the Red Conference, and in the second phase they will be in het games for places 1 to 8.
Setup of the 2017 Men Under 19 competition:
Teams will start into two separate conferences:
- the RED conference will consist of 8 teams (two groups of 4 teams). Each team will play three games in the group phase, officiated by referees participating in the FIBA referee clinic. TWO teams of the RED conference will qualify for the semi-finals for places 1 to 4. The same rule applies for places 5 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 16.
- the GREEN conference will consist of 12 teams (four groups of 3 teams). Each team will play two games in the group phase and one play off game. These games will be officiated by referees part of the Belgian and Dutch referee coaching program. TWO teams of the GREEN conference will qualify for the semi-finals for places 1 to 4. The same rule applies for places 5 to 8, 9 to 12, 13 to 16 and 17 to 20.
- 19 of the 20 participating teams are qualified upon invitation. The last spot will be awarded during a qualification day on november 1st in Kortrijk.
